The early church was known for making a BIG difference
"(Christians) showed unbounded love and loyalty, never sparing themselves and thinking only of one another. Heedless of danger, they took charge of the sick, attending to their every need and ministering to them in Christ, and with them departed this life serenely happy... For they were infected by others with the disease, drawing on themselves the sickness of their neighbors and cheerfully accepting their pains. Many, in nursing and curing others, transferred death to themselvesand died in their stead, turning the common formula that is normally an empty courtesy into a reality." - Dionysius, Bishop of Alexandria
"Any male or female slaves... (they) may have, they persuade them to become Christians because of the love they feel towards them. If they do become Christians, they are brothers to them without discrimination. If anyone among them comes into want while they themselves have nothing to spare, they fast for two or three days for him. In this way they can supply any poor man with the food he needs." - Aristides of Athens
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
"In general, Christians faced the plagues with courage, nursed the sick, and buried the dead. They believed that because God loved them, as undeserving as they were, they were duty-bound to love others." - Gerald Sittser
The defining characteristic of Christianity is love
What is right
What is true
What is good
What is beautiful
- They are not an idiot
- They have an uncommon care for others
- They have an unusual peace about life
"There is something to this community that is beautiful. Therefore, there may be something here that is also good and true. Let me investigate."
The best proof for the validity of Christianity is not an argument, it's a community of love
