What does a “Real Jesus

home culture look like?

Don’t let the baggage of your past sabotage the potential of your future

Family is messy

  • Adam & Eve
  • Noah
  • Abraham
  • Isaac
  • Jacob
  • David

God is more interested in working through broken people than creating picture-perfect families

Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him

Parenting toward happiness

MY ROLE:

  • Party planner
  • Best Friend
  • Superhero

WHEN WE PRIORITIZE HAPPINESS...

  • We won’t let our kids fail
  • We remove the consequences
  • We won’t let them struggle or fight
  • We give them what they should earn
  • We value removing all pain

WHEN WE PRIORITIZE HAPPINESS...

... we do for our children what they should learn to do for themselves

“When we define a child’s happiness as our ultimate goal, we settle for something far less significant than what God has for them and what He has designed them for.”

- Reggie Joiner

We mistakenly believe that all pain and discomfort are bad

My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

“...we’ve given our kids a false sense of reality. We’ve set them up for a painful wake-up call as they grow older. Social scientists agree that our emphasis on winning has produced highly confident kids. Sadly, they also agree that this ill-prepares them for the world that awaits them.”

- Dr. Tim Elmore

Parenting toward performance

MY ROLE:

  • Policeman
  • Coach
  • Judge

WHEN WE PRIORITIZE PERFORMANCE...

  • We hold them to high expectations
  • We get overly angry when they don’t measure up
  • Our praise becomes dependent on their performance
  • Fear becomes our primary motivator

WHEN WE PRIORITIZE PERFORMANCE...

...we unwittingly teach our kids that our love and acceptanceare conditional

We see our kids success as a reflection of our own success

Discipline loses its power when it’s about you saving face

Fathers, don’t exasperate your children by coming down hard on them. Take them by the hand and lead them in the way of the Master.

Parenting toward the heart

MY ROLE:

  • Pastor
  • Shepherd
  • Steward

WHEN WE PRIORITIZE THE HEART...

  • We focus on desires, not just actions
  • We value honesty and transparency
  • We openly admit when we’re wrong
  • We value transformation, not perfection
  • Love is our primary motivator

WHEN WE PRIORITIZE THE HEART...

...our primary job is not simply raising good kids, but rather introducing our kids to the real Jesus
