Adversity // Adversary

The Flesh

1. Wisdom

“If we have love but not wisdom, we will harm people with the best of intentions. If we have courage but not wisdom, we will blunder boldly. If we have truth but not wisdom, we will make the gospel ugly to other people.” - Ray Ortlund

Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

A loud and cheerful greeting early in the morning will be taken as a curse!

A quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping on a rainy day. Stopping her complaints is like trying to stop the wind or trying to hold something with greased hands.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

2. Discipline

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

The World

“…In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

1. The Church

2. Prayer

“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

The Devil

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1. Self-doubt

2. Despair

"The best lines of trash talk are either very brutal, very brazen or very clever. You have this ideal image of yourself, and when that gets undermined by trash talk, you begin to question who you believe you are as a person, what your identity is, and that provokes a very strong reaction of anger and shame." - Karen McDermott

Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
