Emotional Blockage: Do You Have One?

Are you struggling with an emotional blockage? Have you ever felt really bottled up? Maybe you’ve been holding on to a lot of hurts and you just don’t know how to let them go? Or maybe some old feelings keep popping back up. How do you release them?

In this episode, Heather and Jamie talk about Heather’s emotional blockage and how to begin releasing it to feel emotionally, spiritually, and mentally whole.

Releasing your emotional blockage starts with recognizing that you have layers.

Go ahead. Make the Shrek joke. We did. Yes, we have layers just like Ogres have layers, or onions have layers. Or how about parfaits “everybody loves parfaits.” We are not just mental or spiritual or physical beings. We’re mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical beings. Each aspect matters.

“I’M JUST MORE OF A THINKER THAN A FEELER.”

We experience emotional blockages when we downplay the value of our emotions and emphasize the value of one of the other aspects of our being.  Think about the overly spiritual person who refuses to experience sadness. Or a gym rat who is killing it physically but keeps lashing out at the people closest to them. Or, and this is the most common one, the person who always shuts down conversations about emotions because they’re, “Just more of a thinker than a feeler.”

Every person regardless of personality is a mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical being. When we fall into the trap of emotional avoidance we refuse to face our feelings and turn off an aspect of our being. You are no longer a whole, healthy person.

You’ll release your emotional blockage when you stop avoiding your emotions.

So, how do you begin to release an emotional blockage? We hate to be the one to tell you this but … you’ll have to start facing with your emotions, even the ones that don’t feel so great.

You can start processing your emotions by creating a bullet point journal. We move so quickly through life that we often miss what we’re feeling and experiencing emotionally. The goal of this journal is to help you begin to acknowledge and experience your emotions.

How to start:

Releasing an emotional blockage and experiencing your feelings can seem pretty daunting and even create a physical response. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, we recommend processing your emotions with a professional counselor.

Reminder: Jesus doesn’t just care about your spirituality. He cares about your mental, emotional, physical health too. As you go on a journey toward healing, know the Jesus is with you, and if you let Him, He will bring freedom and restoration to every area of your life.
