Navigating Our Emotions

Our emotions are not off-limits! In this episode, Jamie and Heather talk about what they thought of the movie Inside Out 2.

They explore how different life stages, like puberty and menopause, can impact our emotions and thoughts, and how crucial godly community is to our sense of self.

Don’t Be Afraid to Feel Emotions

In our fast-paced, achievement-driven world, emotions often get pushed to the back burner. We’re encouraged to stay positive, keep moving forward, and not let anything hold us back. But what if we’ve been looking at emotions all wrong? What if embracing the full spectrum of our feelings is the key to a richer, more balanced life?

It’s important to remember that all emotions are valid. Instead of categorizing them as “good” or “bad,” try to see them as different shades of the human experience. Embracing the full emotional spectrum allows us to live more authentically and fully.

Unlike the character Joy from the first Inside Out, always trying to shove away the bad memories and emotions, we need to do the opposite and work through our negative emotions. Each feeling has its place and helps us develop a healthy sense of self.

Building Our Sense of Self

Whether you’re 15 or 50, new insecurities and challenges can pop up. It’s important to build a strong sense of self that can handle tough conversations and situations.

In Inside Out, Riley’s sense of self was mostly internal. But in reality, we need outside voices, likely godly community, to help shape and support our self-perception. Having a support system helps us see things more clearly and keeps us balanced.

Our Identity in Christ

Our ultimate sense of self comes from the Lord. Scripture teaches us to take every thought captive, reminding us that we can’t always trust our own perceptions. Regularly reading the Bible helps keep us grounded in truth.

As we go through life, each new season brings with it new challenges and changes. It can be hard to recalibrate. It’s crucial not to go through these changes alone.

By understanding and valuing all our emotions, leaning on supportive communities, and grounding ourselves in truth, we can handle these changes with grace and stay grounded in who we are in Christ.
